Invisible Risks Around the Home

Cherry shrimp are small, sensitive animals, and many everyday household products can harm them. Because aquariums sit in living spaces, fumes, residues, and spills can reach the tank without you noticing. Knowing the common risks helps you protect your colony with simple habits.

Cleaning Sprays and Aerosols

Spray cleaners, air fresheners, and insect sprays release fine particles that can settle on the water surface. These chemicals may be toxic to invertebrates. Avoid spraying anything near the tank, and keep the room ventilated when using aerosols nearby.

Soaps and Detergents

Even trace amounts of soap on your hands, nets, or buckets can harm shrimp. Rinse hands thoroughly with plain water before working in the tank. Use dedicated equipment for the aquarium, and never wash it with dish soap.

Hand Lotions and Cosmetics

Lotions, sunscreen, and cosmetics leave oils and chemicals on your skin that wash into the water. Clean hands carefully with water only before touching tank items. This small habit prevents a surprising number of unexplained problems.

Paints, Glues, and New Furniture

Fresh paint, adhesives, and some new furniture release fumes for days or weeks. These can dissolve into aquarium water. If you are renovating, move the tank away if possible, cover it, and increase ventilation.

Plumbing and Metal Contact

Copper pipes, brass fittings, and metal decorations can leach harmful metals. Use only aquarium-safe equipment and check any unfamiliar items before adding them. Let tap water run briefly before collecting it if you have older plumbing.

Medications and Treatments

Many fish medications and plant treatments are toxic to shrimp. Keep them well away from your shrimp equipment, and never share nets or buckets between tanks. Always check labels for invertebrate safety.

Keeping Equipment Dedicated

Reserve nets, buckets, and tubing for your shrimp tank only. Store them where they will not pick up chemicals from cleaning supplies. A small set of dedicated tools removes a major source of accidental contamination.

Teaching Everyone in the House

If other people share your home, explain the basics of protecting the tank. A short list of rules about sprays, soaps, and feeding can prevent well-meaning mistakes. Shared awareness keeps your colony safe even when you are not around to supervise.

Protecting Your Colony

A careful household routine keeps your colony safe year after year. When you are ready to start or expand, choose healthy cherry shrimp for sale from a reputable seller, and give them a home that is protected from these everyday hazards.
