What Does a Forest Therapy Guide Actually Do?

When people hear about forest therapy for the first time, one question tends to come up right away: if the forest is doing the healing, what exactly is the guide for? It’s a fair question. A forest therapy walk can look deceptively simple from the outside, a small group moving slowly along a trail, pausing often, sometimes sitting in silence. But behind that simplicity is a skilled facilitator making careful choices the whole time. Here’s a closer look at what a forest therapy guide really does.

The Role of the Guide on a Forest Therapy Walk

First and foremost, a guide creates the conditions for people to slow down. Most participants arrive carrying the pace of their daily lives, so the guide begins by helping the group settle into their bodies and senses. This often starts with a gentle sensory opening, inviting people to notice what they can hear, smell, and feel on their skin before they take a single step.

From there, the guide offers a series of invitations. These are simple, open-ended prompts, such as noticing what’s in motion around you or finding a spot that draws your attention and spending time there. The guide doesn’t lecture about tree species or push anyone toward a particular experience. Instead, they offer the invitation, step back, and let each person’s relationship with the land unfold in its own way.

Between invitations, the guide holds sharing circles where participants can speak about what they noticed, if they wish. A good guide listens without judgment or interpretation, which helps create a sense of safety and belonging within the group. Many walks close with a simple tea ceremony, giving people a moment to mark the transition before returning to everyday life. Over time, these small rituals help the group feel connected to one another.

Behind the scenes, a guide is also responsible for practical matters: choosing an accessible route, reading the group’s energy, adapting to weather, and keeping everyone physically and emotionally safe. In other words, a guide’s job is less about leading and more about holding space, so that the forest can do what it does best.

A forest therapy guide is part host, part facilitator, and part quiet witness. They don’t provide the healing; they create the space where people can find it for themselves among the trees.
