If you’ve left high school or are thinking about it, you’ve probably asked yourself whether to earn a diploma or take the GED. Both are real credentials, and both can move your life forward. They aren’t identical, though, and the right choice depends on your goals, your timeline, and how much support you want along the way. Here’s how the two paths compare.
How the Two Paths Compare
What each one is. A high school diploma shows that you completed the required coursework and earned enough credits to graduate. The GED is a set of four exams in math, language arts, science, and social studies. Passing all four earns a high school equivalency credential.
Time and effort. The GED can look like the faster route, especially for strong test-takers, but it’s a test rather than a program, so the preparation is largely up to you. A diploma takes longer if you have many credits to make up, although students who already have credits may need less time than they expect.
College. Most U.S. colleges accept the GED, but admission requirements vary, and some schools may ask GED holders for additional testing or documentation. A diploma comes with a transcript that shows your coursework, grades, and progress, which gives admissions staff more to review.
Employment. Most employers that require a high school education accept either credential. Still, some may prefer a diploma, so check the requirements for any job or training program you have in mind. Either one puts you ahead of having no credential at all.
The military. This is where the difference is clearest. Recruits with a diploma are classified as Tier 1, while GED holders are generally Tier 2. Tier 2 enlistment slots are limited, and GED applicants may need higher test scores or college credits to qualify.
Support along the way. Returning to school gives you teachers, counselors, and a plan to follow. Studying for the GED is often more independent. If you’ve struggled on your own before, structure and encouragement may matter more than speed. Students 18 and older can get that support through an online high school in AZ.
