One of the first questions people ask when booking auto transport is how long it will take. The honest answer depends on distance, route, season, and the car shipping service you choose, but most shipments follow a fairly predictable pattern once you know what drives the schedule.
Here’s a breakdown of typical car shipping timelines and the factors that can speed things up or slow them down.
Typical Car Shipping Timelines by Distance
Distance is the biggest factor. Short trips under 500 miles usually take one to three days once your car is on the truck. Mid-range routes of 500 to 1,500 miles tend to run three to five days, while coast-to-coast shipments generally take seven to ten days. Carriers typically cover a few hundred miles a day, working around federal driving-hour limits and other pickups along the way. Direct routes between major cities usually land on the faster end of these ranges, while remote pickups or drop-offs can add a day or two.
Keep in mind there are two parts to every timeline: the pickup window and the transit time. After you book, it usually takes one to five days to assign a carrier and schedule pickup, depending on how busy your route is.
The type of transport can affect timing too. Open transport is the most common option, so more trucks are running on any given route and pickups are easier to schedule. Enclosed transport offers extra protection for high-value vehicles, but with fewer enclosed trailers on the road, it can take a little longer to line up a carrier.
Door-to-door service keeps things moving on your end, since the driver comes to your address instead of you meeting them at a terminal. In areas with narrow streets or restrictions on large trucks, a nearby meeting spot keeps the handoff quick.
If you’re working against a hard deadline, faster shipping options can shorten the pickup window considerably, putting your vehicle on a truck within a day or two of booking.
Location and season play a role as well. Busy metro routes move faster than rural ones, and seasonal demand can tighten carrier availability in some parts of the country.
Most car shipments arrive within one to ten days of pickup, depending on how far they’re going. Book early, stay flexible on dates when you can, and choose the service that fits your schedule. With a clear picture of the timeline, you can plan the rest of your move around it with confidence.
