Kanna for Anxiety and Mood: What the Research (and Reviews) Say

Kanna has picked up a reputation as the plant that takes the edge off. Scroll through reviews of kanna-based drinks and the same words keep coming up: calmer, lighter, more social, less stuck in my own head. But reputation and research aren’t the same thing. So what does the science actually say about kanna, anxiety, and mood, and how does it line up with what everyday drinkers report? Here’s an honest look at both.

What the Research Shows So Far

Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a succulent native to South Africa, where it has been chewed, brewed, and fermented for centuries. Its best-studied compounds are alkaloids, mainly mesembrine, which appear to act on serotonin reuptake and on an enzyme called PDE4, two pathways closely tied to mood and the body’s stress response. Most modern studies use a standardized extract rather than the raw plant, which makes dosing more consistent.

Small human trials have been encouraging. In one placebo-controlled study, healthy adults who took a kanna extract showed reduced reactivity in the amygdala, the brain’s threat-detection center, when shown fearful faces. Other trials have reported improvements in mood and in certain measures of mental flexibility, along with good tolerability at typical doses. That steady, well-tolerated profile is exactly why a kanna functional drink has become an appealing option for people who want to unwind without alcohol.

What Reviewers Are Saying

Reviews tell a similar story in plainer language. People describe a gentle, social lift rather than a buzz: easier conversation, less overthinking at a party, and no foggy morning after. Many say the effect is subtle, and that’s part of the appeal. It feels more like loosening up than checking out. Reviewers who reach for a kanna-based can in place of a glass of wine often mention feeling present for the whole evening, instead of fading halfway through the night.

It’s worth keeping expectations realistic, though. The research base is still small, most studies are short, and kanna isn’t a treatment for anxiety disorders. Because of its serotonin activity, anyone taking antidepressants or other mood medications should talk to a doctor before trying it. For everyone else, starting with a single serving and paying attention to how your body responds is the sensible approach.

So, does kanna help with anxiety and mood? Early research points to real effects on the brain’s stress response, and plenty of reviews describe a calmer, more connected feeling. It’s not a cure-all, but as a plant-based way to unwind without alcohol, kanna is earning its place, one can at a time.
