Kitchen Cabinets 101: Refacing vs. Replacing — Which Is Right for You?

Cabinets shape the look of a kitchen more than almost anything else. They take up the most visual space, hold most of what you own, and get opened and closed dozens of times a day. So when they start to look dated or wear out, homeowners who call a general contractor in San Jose, CA often ask the same question: should you reface the cabinets you have, or replace them completely? Both options can transform a kitchen, but they differ a lot in cost, timeline and what they can fix.

What Cabinet Refacing Involves

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes in place and updates everything you see. New doors and drawer fronts are installed, the exposed frames are covered with a matching veneer, and fresh hardware ties the look together. Because the boxes and layout stay the same, the work is usually finished in a few days, with far less mess and disruption than a full tear-out.

Refacing is a strong choice when your cabinet boxes are solid and you like the current layout. It typically costs much less than new cabinetry, and it keeps usable materials out of the landfill.

When Replacing Makes More Sense

Replacement means removing the old cabinets entirely and installing new ones. It costs more and takes longer, but it lets you change everything: the layout, the height of the upper cabinets, the size of the island and the storage inside each cabinet.

Replacement is usually the better path if the boxes are water-damaged, sagging or made of weak particleboard. It also makes sense if the kitchen doesn’t work for the way you cook, such as when you need more counter space, wider walkways or a pantry wall. Since new cabinets often mean new countertops too, many homeowners fold the change into a larger kitchen project.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide

Start with the condition of the boxes. Open each cabinet and check for soft spots, warping or loose joints. Next, think about the layout. If it already flows well, refacing protects that. Finally, set a clear budget and timeline, and consider how long you plan to stay in the home. A quick refresh before selling points one way; a long-term family kitchen may point the other.

There’s no single right answer, only the right fit for your kitchen, your budget and your plans. Refacing delivers a fresh look quickly when the bones are good, while replacing gives you a clean slate when the layout or structure no longer works. At Brother & Brother Builders, we help San Jose homeowners weigh both options honestly, so the cabinets you end up with look great and work well for years to come.
