Rosary Chains and Jewelry Chains: A Beginner’s Guide to Chain Types

Beads and pendants get most of the attention, but the chain is what holds a piece together, literally. Choose the wrong one and a beautiful stone can twist, sag, or slip free. Choose well and the chain becomes part of the design, carrying the weight of your work and framing every bead. If you’re new to jewelry making, learning the main chain types is one of the quickest ways to make your pieces look finished and last longer.

Common Chain Types Every Beginner Should Know

Most jewelry chains are built from connected links, but the shape and size of those links change how a chain looks, moves, and holds up. Here are the styles you’ll reach for most often.

Rosary Chain

A rosary chain is made of beads wired individually and joined by small loops, so every bead becomes its own link. It’s traditionally used for prayer beads, but jewelry makers love it for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings because it puts the stones front and center. Many come ready-made with gemstones already wrapped, which saves hours of wire work and gives even a first project a polished, handmade look.

Cable Chain

The cable chain is the classic: uniform oval or round links joined one after another. It’s simple, sturdy, and easy to open with pliers, which makes it ideal for hanging pendants or adding charms anywhere along its length.

Curb and Figaro Chains

Curb chains use twisted links that lie flat against the skin, giving a bolder, more polished look. Figaro chains alternate short and long links in a repeating pattern. Both suit statement necklaces and bracelets where the chain itself is meant to be seen.

Box, Rope, and Snake Chains

These tighter, more structured styles are smooth and strong. Box chains use square links, rope chains twist strands into a spiral, and snake chains form a flexible tube. They’re great for slim pendants but harder to customize, since their links don’t open easily.

Choosing the Right Chain for Your Project

Start with the purpose of the piece. Heavy stones need a strong chain, delicate charms look best on fine links, and beadwork shines on a rosary chain that lets each stone take the spotlight. Match the metal tone to your findings, and buy a little extra length to allow for mistakes. Once you understand how each chain behaves, you’ll see the difference in every piece of handmade jewelry you make or wear.
